Feminae Records was founded by violinist Aleksandra Maslovaric to promote music composed and performed by women.
Today in Pop music, R&B, Country, Folk, and even Jazz, prominent women performers and occasionally even composers are often found. However, the Classical genre is in many ways still a boys’ club. There are certainly several great women active in the genre, including violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, conductor Marin Alsop, soprano Cecilia Bartoli, and LSO Managing Director Kathryn McDowell, yet Classical music continues to be virtually closed when it comes to the works of women composers.
But they’re out there. Women have been making and composing music for centuries, millennia even! We believe that revealing and sharing this outstanding repertoire—balancing the “playing field,” if you will—is a critical part of ensuring that concert music has genuine value and meaning for generations to come. Therefore, Feminae Records will continue to produce and release works by great female composers, both forgotten and yet-to-be-discovered. Our sons and daughters deserve this legacy.
